AKC Humane Fund grant funds were used by Lollypop Farm/Humane Society of Rochester and Monroe County (NY) to help offset the cost of food and shelter for 36 pets whose owners were suffering from domestic abuse. These women were staying in a local battered women’s shelter that does not permit pets.
The major outcome of this grant program has been lives saved and dignity restored. Women and children whose lives have been overturned by domestic violence have been reassured that the one source of comfort and conditional love in their lives – their pet – will not be lost to them. But there is still plenty of work to be done.
Last year, a dog died of heat exposure when left in a car outside a women’s shelter because a victim could not bear to give up her pet. Pet-friendly policies at women’s shelters and support programs like Lollypop Farm are needed to prevent such tragedies from occurring. The AKC Humane Fund strives to educate and provide funding opportunities to preserve the human animal bond even under dire circumstances.
